Spice Island Youthquake celebrates its 25th Anniversary

Spice Island Youthquake, the oldest folk group of its kind, is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year.

The group, which began in Gouyave, St. John’s as a junior choir in the St. Peter’s Parish Church, began its celebrations with a Silver Jubilee Gospel Concert in Thanksgiving and Praise on Sunday, April 17, 2005 at the said church.

Proceeds from that concert will be donated to the St. Peter’s R.C. Church to help in the repairs of the church and presbetery which was badly damaged by Hurricane Ivan last year.

Two other Gospel Concerts are scheduled for June 4 in Carriacou and on July 10th at the Grenada Trade Centre and proceeds will go to rebuilding the Roman Catholic Churches in Grenada which were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Ivan.

Mawasi Experience, a drumming group from Trinidad and Tobago, will also participate in the Gospel Concert at the Grenada Trade Centre.

On Sunday May 22nd, Spice Island Youthquake participated in an Anniversary Thanksgiving Mass at the Grand Anse R.C. Church. This was followed by a social on the Grand Anse Beach. The group has had a very close relationship with the Grand Anse R.C. Church since one of its founding members, the late Kenneth St. John was a member of that congregation.

The group is planning to release three CDs this year, two in June and the other one in December.

The major anniversary production “Silver Harvest” is being planned for August.
