Grenada is known as the Isle of Spice. Nutmeg, mace cinnamon and cloves are produced in abundance. Youthquake is the title of an inspirational song composed by Pearl Mulraine of Trinidad & Tobago, which expresses the desire of youth to improve the quality of life for everyone.
In 1980 the junior church choir in Gouyave, a fishing town, adopted the title Spice Island Youthquake. The late Ray Carroll, an Irish architect who visted Grenada in that year, encouraged the group to travel.
A 30 concert tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland was undertaken in 1981. This tour was an outstanding success and laid the foundation for a promising future.
From its foundation Spice Island Youthquake had five objectives:
1. To promote the music, song and dance of the Caribbean;
2. To build bridges between peoples of different backrounds;
3. To provide an educational experience for young Grenadians;
4. To market Grenada overseas and to enkindle in Grenadians living abroad a love of their own culture;
5. To raise funds for social, cultural and development projects in Grenada.
